eleXsys Energy nominated for Earthshot Prize

Australian-developed clean technology solution and Climate Salad member eleXsys Energy has been nominated for the 2022 Earthshot Prize, considered the most prestigious global environment award in history. Launched by Prince William and The Royal Foundation two years ago, the Earthshot Prize represents a worldwide search for the most extraordinary eco-solutions for the planet.

eleXsys has been nominated in the Fix Our Climate category, which is based on three selection priorities of transitioning to renewable energy, reducing methane emissions and constructing buildings fit for the future. The world-leading eleXsys technology unleashes the full potential of locally generated renewable energy by solving major voltage problems. It allows clean energy generation such as commercial rooftop solar to feed multiple times more energy back into existing grids without the need for expensive infrastructure and equipment upgrades.

eleXsys Energy was nominated by official Nominator Purpose Driven Innovation Ecosystem (PDIEGroup), an organisation that nominated the eventual winner in the Fix Our Climate category in 2021. Winners in the five Earthshot Prize categories in 2022 will be announced at ceremony in New York later this year and each will receive £1 million (A$1.79 million) and tailored support from around the world to scale their operations.

The Earthshot Prize Council that determines the winner includes Prince William, broadcaster and naturalist Sir David Attenborough, Alibaba Group founder Jack Ma, actress and humanitarian CateBlanchett and Columbian singer-songwriter Shakira.

eleXsys Energy CEO Dr Bevan Holcombe the Earthshot Prize nomination ranked among the company’s biggest achievements to date.

“The first year of the prize included many outstanding organisations from around the world offering the type of vital contributions we need to change the course of our planet’s future,” Dr Holcombe said. “To be featured in such prestigious company is a great honour for us and a testament to all the hard work and dedication of the eleXsys Energy team.

“Together, we have transformed an idea to address emerging voltage issues facing clean energy producers into an ever-growing number of applications that will enable renewable energy systems and reduce reliance of traditional electricity grids.

“Our solution addresses two of the three Earthshot Prize selection criteria head on, namely accelerating the transition to renewable energy, and encouraging both new and existing buildings to make better use of rooftop space to generate green energy for local and community use.”

The eleXsys technology – which combines an advanced power electronics device with artificial intelligence (AI) software applications – is already being recognised around the world with a growing collection of awards. It was the 2021 winner in the Renewable Energy Category of the Davos EnergyWeek Startup pitch competition and most recently a finalist in the 2022 Zayed Sustainability Prize.

Founded in Brisbane and now headquartered in London, eleXsys Energy is undertaking a major project in Adelaide through a partnership with global retailer and sustainability leader IKEA. The IKEA eleXsys Microgrid is combining commercial-scale rooftop solar and batteries with eleXsys technology to create a new model for renewable energy systems.

In November 2021, the Australian Government announced financial support of $3.5 million to assist in building eleXsys Energy’s first dedicated Australian manufacturing facility.
